A 10% reduction in the number of Russian army personnel will not bring the desired economic effect, but it will aggravate relations among representatives of various branches of the armed forces and military services, Director of the Bureau of Military-Political Analysis Alexander Mikhailov told Izvestia on Tuesday, October 20.

Non-statutory attitude: the Ministry of Finance has prepared a reform of the armed forces Among the department’s initiatives – a 10% reduction in the number of the armed forces and an increase in the age of retirement

Earlier that day, Izvestia, with reference to the project of the Ministry of Finance of Russia, reported that the number of military personnel could be reduced by 10%. The project involves the optimization of costs through vacancies. In addition, the initiative can be realized through the transfer to the civil service of those who are not associated with the implementation of combat missions, namely teachers, financiers, personnel officers, doctors, logisticians and lawyers, writes Gazeta.ru.

Mikhailov noted that similar experiments on the dismissal from military service of representatives of some military professions, including military doctors, lawyers, journalists, teachers and others, were carried out under the former Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov. According to the expert, history has shown that these were the wrong decisions.

“The same applies to the Ministry of Finance’s attempts to remove the annual indexation of the military pension and change the principles of military mortgage. By doing this, they will only achieve massive discontent from the military, ”said the military political scientist.

On the other hand, one can agree with the proposal to increase the term of service to 25 years, removing from it studies at a military university, the director of the Bureau of Military-Political Analysis believes. Currently, military personnel can retire after 20 years, while years of study are counted in the length of service.

“When you look at officers who retire at the age of 37–38 and then don’t know where to apply their strength and education, you understand that contract military service, and in the 21st century, should last at least 25–30 years”, – emphasized Mikhailov.

Moreover, many officers serve in certain regions of the country, where the term of service is subject to preferential terms, and retire at the age of 30–35.

On October 20, the Russian Ministry of Defense said that they considered the Ministry of Finance’s proposal to reduce the size of the country’s Armed Forces unacceptable. According to the military department, the idea of the Ministry of Finance to reduce the number of posts in the Armed Forces will lead to zero economic effect, writes Gazeta.ru.

The press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov said on the same day that the Kremlin had not taken decisions on the reform of the Ministry of Defense and the reduction of the number of the Armed Forces of Russia.

In addition, Major General Hero of Russia Sergei Lipovoy, Chairman of the Presidium of the All-Russian Organization “Officers of Russia”, said that the reforms proposed by the department regarding the domestic Armed Forces “cause, to put it mildly, bewilderment.”
