The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that Tu-22M3, Su-34, Su-24M planes of the Southern Military District have practiced a massive bombardment of simulated enemy targets at ranges near Astrakhan as part of the Kavkaz-2020 strategic command and staff exercises.
The crews dropped bombs weighing from 250 to 500 kg on targets that imitated armored vehicles, concrete shelters and command posts.
“In the course of the air strike, long-range aviation crews operated in pairs, and the flight personnel of the bomber aviation of the Southern Military District carried out bombing as part of a flight with four aircraft,” the message says.
Also, in order not to get hit by a retaliation from the ground, the pilots fired pyrotechnic cartridges.
In addition, bombers covered Su-27 fighters, and more than 30 aircraft took part in the flights.
On September 21, the strategic exercises “Kavkaz-2020” began in the Southern Military District. More than 80 thousand people were attracted to participate in them. The main maneuvers will take place at the Prudboy, Ashuluk, Kapustin Yar training grounds, as well as at the Arzgirsky and Kopansky air training grounds.
