A Russian MiG-31 fighter climbed to intercept a Norwegian patrol aircraft over the Barents Sea. This was announced on Tuesday, September 1, at the National Defense Control Center of Russia.
According to the center, airspace control facilities over the neutral waters of the Barents Sea noticed an air target approaching the state border of Russia. To identify it, a MiG-31 was raised from the air defense forces of the Northern Fleet on duty.
“The crew of the Russian fighter identified the air target as the Norwegian Air Force P-3C Orion base patrol aircraft. After the Norwegian plane turned away from the state border of the Russian Federation, the Russian fighter safely returned to the home airfield, ”the center said.
They also emphasized that the flight of the MiG-31 took place in strict accordance with international rules for the use of airspace.
On 26 August, a Russian fighter jet also intercepted a Norwegian P-3C Orion over the Barents Sea. There were no border violations.
