Participants of the strategic exercises “Kavkaz-2020” will be provided with ecologically clean energy, the Defense Ministry told Izvestia. Wind generators and solar power plants will be deployed in the fields – command posts, weapons systems and military equipment, and tent camps will receive energy from them. Unlike conventional diesel generators, the new power supply systems do not unmask the positions of the troops. And besides, new items will save significant funds, experts remind.
Do without diesel
During the exercise, the military will check how effectively wind and solar generators can be used in the army and what facilities they can provide with stable electricity, the Defense Ministry told Izvestia.

The 10 kW autonomous power module developed for the troops includes a photovoltaic power plant and a wind power plant. He can power equipment both in field camps and in positions. There are also more powerful wind systems with a capacity of up to 35 kW – they can operate at a wind speed of 2.5 to 25 m / s.
Today, the campgrounds and military vehicles are powered by diesel generators. In the near future, they are unlikely to be abandoned by the troops, but new energy sources will help significantly save fuel, believes Colonel Alexander Perendzhiev, associate professor at the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics.
“During the exercises, it will be possible to test in practice how solar and wind systems can meet the needs of the troops,” he explained to Izvestia. – And diesel fuel, which will save these energy sources, is better spent on refueling combat vehicles. In any case, based on the results of the maneuvers, manuals and other guiding documents on the use of solar and wind power plants will be written.
Will not give out to the enemy
In addition to saving fuel, the new generators have another advantage. Diesel engines make noise and radiate heat, which is why enemy reconnaissance means can detect the positions of our troops, said military expert Viktor Murakhovsky.
Tension of the “Caucasus”: the military will reduce the activity of exercises near the border The main elements of the September maneuvers will be transferred to training grounds inland
“Now all branches of the military are densely saturated with various electronics and electrical equipment,” he told Izvestia. – We are talking not only about combat and support vehicles, but also about a variety of remote-type devices: field tablets, optical-electronic reconnaissance devices, communications equipment, including portable radio stations and many others. Most of them run on batteries that require charging. There are charging stations, but they are located on equipment that is not always at hand. Solar and wind power generators are of great importance in this situation. As for field kitchens and tents, new devices are unlikely to be able to fully provide them with power. They need a backup diesel generator.
In recent years, the troops have received modern equipment for providing everyday supplies to troops in the field. Wood-fired field kitchens are being replaced by multi-cookers and bakeries equipped with electric generators. And tarpaulin tents with potbelly stoves give way to modern climate-controlled shelters. They will provide a comfortable rest for servicemen at temperatures outside the window from plus to minus 50 degrees. All this economy can be used not only during exercises, but also in emergency situations.
During the exercise, troops are stationed at training grounds in tent camps. The place for them is chosen by the commander in agreement with the local authorities. The residential sector is divided into rectangular blocks, which are separated by roads – their width is from 5 to 10 m. Directly between the tents there should be passages at least 3 m wide. Outbuildings, as well as military equipment parks, are located behind the third residential line. The ammunition and explosives depots are taken out of the camp. Roads on the territory of the landfill are equipped with direction indicators, as well as road signs indicating the permissible speed of vehicles.
The strategic exercises “Kavkaz-2020” will be held from 21 to 26 September at the Kapustin Yar and Ashuluk ranges, as well as in the waters of the Black and Caspian Seas. As previously reported by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, during the maneuvers, the issues of command and control of groups of forces in joint operations to localize and resolve armed conflicts related to countering terrorism will be worked out.
Later, Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin specified that during the exercises, the groups of the Ground Forces, aviation and air defense, the forces of the Black Sea Fleet and the Caspian Flotilla would be involved. According to him, subdivisions of Armenia, Belarus, China, Myanmar and Pakistan will take part in the land grouping, and Azerbaijan and Iran have been invited to participate in the drawings of the training episodes in the Caspian Sea.
