The command of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) summed up the results of the experimental exercises. The maneuvers were simultaneously held in Karelia, Voronezh, Tver and Kursk regions, as well as at training grounds in the Astrakhan region. For the first time, more than a hundred combat vehicles operated according to a single plan at a distance of thousands of kilometers from each other. To control the disparate air forces in real time, the latest automated communication systems were involved, as well as the “military Internet”, which is called the “Closed segment of data transmission.” During the day, the air group reflected in real time a massive enemy strike, intercepted its targets and simultaneously destroyed ground targets and air defense systems.

According to a single plan
Although the exercises ended at the end of September, it became known about them only now. The analysis of the results obtained took several weeks. According to Izvestia sources in the military department, the experience gained during the large-scale exercises of the Aerospace Forces has been recognized as successful. Now, thanks to new control systems, videoconferencing systems will be able to close entire regions with an impenetrable shield.
During the maneuvers, they checked in real time not only the level of training of the flight and technical personnel, but also the capabilities of the latest automated control systems, as well as communication complexes. More than a hundred fighters, bombers and interceptors were involved in the experiment. For the first time, such a large-scale exercise took place according to a single plan in regions remote hundreds and thousands of kilometers from each other, while the command controlled a diverse group in real time.
The main participants in the experimental maneuvers were aircraft of the 105th Guards Mixed Aviation Division of the Western Military District. The regiments of the division are armed with MiG-31BM, Su-30SM, Su-34, Su-35.
The air group repulsed a massive attack of a simulated enemy, intercepted its targets, including hypersonic missiles, and at the same time destroyed ground targets and air defense systems.
The maneuvers took place in Tver, Astrakhan, Kursk, Voronezh regions, as well as in Karelia.
It took several days to prepare for the exercises. The main stage took less than a day. During it, in the Voronezh region, Su-34 bombers practiced hitting ground targets and launching missiles at night. In Karelia, MiG-31BM high-altitude fighters and Su-35S fighters took part in air battles with a mock enemy – in particular, supersonic vehicles worked out the ability to intercept hypersonic targets at high altitudes.

At the same time, air battles unfolded over the Ashuluk training ground in the Astrakhan region. There, a group of Su-30SM fighters struck at ground-based air defense systems, and then hit air targets with air-to-air missiles.
“It is not easy to strike and perform air defense functions at the same time: you need to track both the air and ground situation,” the ex-commander of the 4th Air Force and Air Defense Army, Lieutenant General Valery Gorbenko, explained to Izvestia. – Controlling strikes, aircraft lifting and their guidance while repelling air raids is a serious task for the command and staff. A large burden fell on the management of the division: actions were worked out in different directions, it was necessary to quickly study the data and make decisions.
During hostilities, the situation changes rapidly, at any moment a situation may arise when units of the Aerospace Forces will operate in different regions according to a single plan. The crews and command of the formations must be ready to perform such tasks, Valery Gorbenko emphasized.
In the interests of the “Caucasus-2020”
During the actions at the Ashuluk training ground, Su-30SM fighters worked in the interests of the ground group, which in those days participated in the strategic exercises Kavkaz-2020. According to legend, they repulsed a massive air strike and suppressed a number of ground targets with fire.
The strategic exercises Kavkaz-2020 were held in the Southern Military District (YuVO) at the end of September. In total, 30 training grounds were involved in the final strategic maneuvers of this year, including those in Abkhazia, Armenia and South Ossetia. The actions of interspecific military groups were also practiced in the waters of the Black and Caspian Seas. According to the Ministry of Defense, a total of about 80 thousand servicemen, representatives of the Russian Guard and the Ministry of Emergencies, up to 250 tanks, up to 450 infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers, up to 200 guns and multiple launch rocket systems took part in them.

Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov highly appreciated the training of the troops. According to him, during the drawing of the main stage, a new element of operational formation was demonstrated in practice – the so-called mobile echelon. Unlike traditional elements (first echelon, second, etc.), for which the front and direction of movement were initially determined, the mobile can operate in a wide radius at the command’s decision. For example, quickly create a defensive line in a dangerous direction or delay a retreating enemy. It is based on helicopter-based airmobile units.
At the main stage, the work of reconnaissance and fire complexes and the four main methods of destroying “jihad mobiles” were also demonstrated.
Earlier, Izvestia reported that a modification of the Su-30SM2 fighter would take to the air by the end of this year. It was equipped with an AL-41F-1C variable wind thrust engine, updated avionics, optics, radar and surveillance systems. In the future, it is planned to completely replace the radar and bring the machines available in the VKS to the CM2 standard.
