Coming from the north: “Karakurt” successfully tested in the Arctic

The Russian Navy has completed testing of the newest Project 22800 Karakurt small missile ship (MRK) in the Arctic latitudes. Previously, it was not known whether such ships could operate in conditions of abnormally low temperatures and difficult weather. However, during an almost two-month campaign, the Odintsovo MRK of Project 22800 successfully completed all tasks in the Barents and White Seas and conducted rocket firing. According to experts, the ability to transfer small ships with cruise missiles on board from the Baltic to the Arctic radically increases the potential of the Russian group in the Arctic.

The tests of the Odintsovo MRK in the Barents and White Seas were recognized as successful, Izvestia sources in the military department said. The ship, sent to the northern latitudes in early August, completed the set of tasks assigned to it and returned to St. Petersburg by inland waterways a few days ago.

The Karakurt are small ships with a displacement of 800 tons and have an impressive arsenal: they carry Caliber cruise missiles, a 76.2-mm AK-176MA launcher, and, if necessary, can be equipped with Onyx anti-ship missiles. In 2016, in Syria, during attacks on terrorist targets, the mobile coastal missile system Bastion was successfully launched at the bases and command posts of the militants.

In addition, the Orlan-10 drones with a range of up to 120 km are based on board the ship. The Navy plans to use them as air reconnaissance and gunners. UAVs will make stealth ships almost invisible, since drones can be raised into the sky to assess the environment, and not turn on radars, the signal of which can be detected by the radar of a potential enemy.

MRK project 22800 is equipped with modern complexes of combat control, detection, target designation and communication.

Odintsovo is the third representative of the series, and changes have been made to its design. The main difference between this ship and its predecessors is the presence on board the naval version of the Pantsir-M anti-aircraft missile and cannon complex (ZRPK). It consists of eight installations and two six-barreled 30-mm rapid-fire automatic cannons. The system can shoot down cruise and anti-ship missiles, drones, airplanes and helicopters.

It is planned that “Odintsovo” will become part of the 1st Guards Division of the 36th brigade of missile boats of the Baltic Fleet. His ships are at the naval base in Baltiysk (Kaliningrad region). The first RTOs of this project – “Mytishchi” and “Sovetsk”, are already in service there.

For all fleets

There is no space in the Baltic for the ships to be able to launch missile launches at least half of the maximum range, said former Chief of the Main Staff of the Navy, Admiral Valentin Selivanov. Therefore, they went to the northern seas to test the weapons systems of the RTOs. However, the fact that they successfully completed all tasks, including in difficult weather conditions, makes it possible to transfer them to the Northern Fleet, if the need arises.

“Tests of small ships took place, including in difficult weather conditions – we looked at how the weapon works in rough seas of five to seven points,” the admiral explained to Izvestia. – In the event of an aggravation of the situation in the North, if there are large enemy forces there, MRK can be transferred there from the Baltic Sea.

Valentin Selivanov recalled that during the Great Patriotic War, several officers of the Northern Fleet were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

– They fought on very small torpedo boats. They went out, groups attacked convoys in the area of ​​the border with Norway, and very successfully, – said the admiral. – For a torpedo attack, you need to approach a distance of three or four, maximum five cables. And under fire. And for a boat, even a machine-gun burst that pierced the side can cause serious malfunctions. Vasily Ivanovich Bykov received the Star of the Hero for the fact that when a group of torpedo boats attacked a guarded convoy, in front of the enemy’s eyes, he swept at a distance of three cables and set up a smoke screen. Today, a Project 22160 patrol ship bears his name.

RTOs of project 22800 are considered the most massive and at the same time modern ships that come to the fleet today. In total, 18 Karakurt were ordered for the Navy. According to the plan, they should be equally divided between the Pacific, Baltic and Black Sea fleets.

As Izvestia previously reported, at the same time as Karakurt, the Zeleny Dol MRC of project 21631 Buyan-M was tested by the waters of the northern seas. The ship, which is part of the Baltic Fleet, entered the exercise area by inland waterways – through the Neva, Lake Ladoga and the White Sea-Baltic Canal to the White Sea. While in the Northern Fleet, RTOs made calls to Severodvinsk and Severomorsk. In total, the crew covered over 3.3 thousand nautical miles. In the White Sea, the ship conducted a combat launch of the Kalibr cruise missile.

MRK “Zeleny Dol” has a displacement of 850 tons and is designed to destroy sea targets in the coastal zone. It carries eight launchers for cruise missiles of the “Caliber” type or anti-ship “Onyx”, as well as artillery weapons. In addition, these small ships are equipped with impressive reconnaissance equipment and, if necessary, can be included in the so-called reconnaissance-strike and reconnaissance-fire contours.
