According to Deputy Defense Minister Dmitry Bulgakov, the fire was contained during the day. According to Izvestia sources, it was originally supposed to deal with the fire only by the morning of October 9, but it was possible to do this earlier. Now the military is planning on Friday to begin the control strait of the warehouse territory. And on Saturday, engineering and sapper units are to start clearing the rubble and collecting ammunition. But it will start only after the territory is thoroughly surveyed.

As the Ministry of Defense told Izvestia, on October 8, during the day, aircraft and helicopters of the Russian Aerospace Forces dropped over 1,000 tons of water onto the burning arsenal.

“If we analyze the experience of liquidating similar fires in recent years, on average, localization of fire takes one or two days,” military expert Vladislav Shurygin told Izvestia. – After that, work begins on the analysis of the territory. The military has worked out the technology. Unfortunately, taking into account the statistics of fires.

The expert noted that the warehouse is used for the disposal of ammunition, and this requires particularly careful handling.

The battle fell: a fire at an ammunition depot started due to a fire in the grass In the Ryazan region, ammunition explodes in a military unit, the nearest villages are evacuated, a federal highway is blocked

– Ammunition must be unloaded, disassembled, removed from them gunpowder, non-ferrous and ferrous metals. Carelessness in work is not excluded. Perhaps there was sloppiness – how did the fire arise on the territory? But natural causes cannot be ruled out. The warehouse is located in the forest, but behind the fire-retardant strip, so the fire could hardly have got there from the outside. But a fire could have occurred on the territory. This story, of course, requires its own investigation, – concluded Vladislav Shurygin.

Sapper robots

Combined demining teams arrived at the scene of the emergency. They included about 120 specialists from engineering units of the Western Military District and 32 pieces of equipment. Sappers cleared the territory of the Degtyarka village, located 1.5 km from the arsenal, from explosive objects, and conducted engineering reconnaissance along its perimeter.

Among the equipment brought by the sappers are the newest robotic systems Uran-6 and Uran-14. The first is used for reconnaissance and mine clearance. It can be equipped with a roller, striker or milling trawl, dozer blade or mechanical gripper. If an explosive device is detected, the mechanisms of the machine render it unusable. The robot is controlled by an operator who follows him at a distance of at least 50 m. Uran-6 was actively used to clear the area in the North Caucasus, in the Syrian Palmyra, and last year it was involved in a fire at an arsenal in Achinsk.

Fate of fire: robots will help engineering troops fight fire Ground drones “Uran-14” will clear the way for the military and help out in the elimination of natural disasters

Uran-14 is a military firefighter who must pave the way for military units through burning terrain, but is also involved in fighting fire in peacetime. It can extinguish a fire at a distance of at least 35 m with a foam jet and at least 50 m with a water jet. It is equipped with a water fire pump with a capacity of 2 thousand liters per minute. The robot is equipped with a rotary gripper, which is capable of carrying loads weighing up to 2 tons.

Not the first fire

The fire at the arsenal began on October 7 in the area of the Zheltukhinsky settlement in the Skopinsky district of the Ryazan region. The fire began to detonate ammunition. More than 1.5 thousand shells exploded in total. According to the latest data, 16 people were injured, more than 2.3 thousand local residents were evacuated.

The preliminary cause of the emergency was immediately named – grass fire. According to the press service of the Western Military District, the gusty wind threw fire to the site for storing artillery shells.

The incident in the Ryazan region is not the first this year. On May 9, on the territory of the former arsenal in Udmurt Pugachevo, small-caliber ammunition began to detonate due to the fire of dry grass. The area of the fire reached 15 hectares, the residents of the area were evacuated. There was no information about the victims.

In the early 2010s, emergency situations at ammunition depots happened regularly. So, in 2011, arsenals burned in Udmurtia and Bashkiria, in 2012 – two warehouses in the Orenburg region and one in Primorye. After the Ministry of Defense tightened control over the storage and disposal of ammunition, the number of accidents decreased. In 2017, there was no emergency, in 2018 a fire broke out in Udmurtia (in the same warehouse as in 2011), there were no casualties.

Last year, on August 5, a warehouse in the Achinsky district of the Krasnoyarsk Territory caught fire. More than 16 thousand people were evacuated from settlements within a radius of 20 km from the facility. Soon people were allowed to return to their homes, but on August 9, new explosions thundered. The Ministry of Defense explained them with a lightning strike. In total, as a result of the emergency, more than 40 people suffered, one died.
