“Terminators”, “Breakthroughs” and “Berezhki” will unite. The Ministry of Defense is working on the issue of forming regiments and brigades “with increased combat capabilities.” These will be already existing military units that will be re-equipped with the latest armored vehicles: T-90M tanks, infantry fighting vehicles (BMP-2M) with the Berezhok module and the Terminator tank support combat vehicles (BMPT). The equipment will be concentrated in several formations at once, which will create an “armored fist” capable of radically changing the situation on the battlefield, experts say.
Role for “Terminator”: a new type of armored vehicles is being tested. Exercises “Kavkaz-2020” will decide the fate of tank support combat vehicles
Three in one
The final decision on the creation of new regiments and brigades will be made after special research exercises are held, Izvestia sources clarified. As the commander-in-chief of the Ground Forces Oleg Salyukov said earlier, maneuvers with the participation of the T-90M Proryv, BMP-2M Berezhok and BMPT Terminator will take place next year. Based on the results of the combat training use of equipment, its role in the combat formation of troops will be determined. In the army, promising formations have already been called “brigades of the future.”
The modernized T-90M is the most modern tank in service with Russia. In terms of its characteristics, it is very close to the promising T-14 Armata tank, which is currently being tested. The T-90M is only slightly inferior to the “Armata” in driving performance and armor protection, having the same firepower. The upgraded version received an improved 2A46M5-01 cannon, a more powerful diesel engine, an automated fire control system “Kalina” and a remotely controlled anti-aircraft machine gun “Kord-MT”. During the revision of the machine, its protection was significantly increased. In particular, Kevlar anti-splinter screens were installed inside the fighting compartment, and the bulk of the ammunition was placed in a special box behind the tower.
The BMP-2M is considered a deep modernization of the BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicle, developed back in Soviet times. However, in essence, this is a completely different technique. The car received a new UTD-23 turbocharged engine with a capacity of 400 hp, hydraulic shock absorbers with increased energy intensity, reinforced road wheels, and rubber-metal tracks last longer and do less damage to the roads. At the regular places of the commander and gunner-operator, sights with night and thermal imaging observation channels are installed. Weapons and observation devices are stabilized and can automatically keep the target in sight during the day and at night, as well as in motion.
Mine intentions: “Agriculture” has been tested and goes into service A unique engineering system of remote mining will appear in the army next year
The main advantage of the BMP-2M is the Berezhok combat module, which gives the vehicle significant firepower. It includes a 30mm automatic cannon, a 7.62mm machine gun, and an automatic grenade launcher. In addition, four missiles of the Kornet-E anti-tank complex are now mounted on it. They can hit ground and air targets at a distance of up to 10 km and are capable of penetrating any armor protection.
“Terminator” without analogues
BMPT “Terminator” belongs to a fundamentally new class of equipment, which has not yet been found in any army in the world. Now the military is looking for the most suitable role and place in the battle formation for him. The vehicle is equipped with two 30mm 2A42 automatic cannons, two AGS-17 automatic grenade launchers, and four Ataka supersonic guided missiles. All this is mounted on the T-72 chassis, so that the BMPT is not much inferior to tanks in terms of protection.
The firepower of the new regiments and brigades will significantly exceed that of the current tank and motorized rifle units, military expert Viktor Murakhovsky believes.
“Both the BMP-2M with the Berezhok module and the T-90M tanks have much higher combat capabilities than the previous modifications, and the BMPT is generally a new type of equipment,” he said. – In general, the idea of so-called combat modules, when tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and BMPTs are in the same unit, has been promoted for quite a long time. You have to watch how it will look in practice. Perhaps it will be tank, motorized rifle and support platoons in one company, or it will be companies as part of a battalion tactical group. We did not have such mixed formations, unlike some foreign states. For example, the Bundeswehr has mixed battalions with motorized infantry and tank units.
Will be sent to jail: new equipment will be closed with combined screens of armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles will receive additional protection
According to Viktor Murakhovsky, the concentration of the latest machines in some regiments and brigades is much more effective than the even distribution of equipment among all the Ground Forces. This will allow, if necessary, to assemble an armored strike group in an important direction, which can decide the outcome of the battle.
“How to use these forces should be investigated in practice,” he said. – This has always been the case when we received new equipment or new structures were formed: we conducted tactical exercises with live fire in various situations, determined real combat capabilities, etc.
Earlier, Izvestia reported that the Ministry of Defense and enterprises of the military-industrial complex had agreed on the timing of state tests of promising combat vehicles of the Kurganets-25 family. They will begin in a year, and the end is scheduled for the fall of 2022. The armored vehicles will be checked in different weather conditions and climatic zones. According to experts, some of its components and assemblies are already being tested.
