Already on the “Approach”: the Urals and Siberia will be protected from cruise missiles and drones


Air defense units will close the Urals and Siberia with a radar dome. The subdivisions will receive unique systems – low-altitude Podlet-K1 systems. They are considered to be the most effective means of detecting drones and cruise missiles. The task of the radar station will be to protect strategically important industrial facilities in the regions, experts noted.

From Volga to Baikal

A fundamental decision to strengthen the radar shield in Siberia and the Urals at the expense of the Podlet-K1 radar has been made, sources in the military department told Izvestia. Unique complexes at the end of autumn have already entered service with the 14th Army of the Air Force and Air Defense. Completion of deliveries is expected by the end of next year.

Radar “Podlet-K1” is specially designed for reliable detection of small and low-speed targets at low altitudes. These include cruise missiles and UAVs. The system copes with the task of detecting them better than multifunctional universal radars. The radar is capable of detecting airborne objects at a distance of up to 300 km. This technique is used to strengthen the S-400 complexes in the most threatened areas.

The system includes a tower with a radar mounted on a four-axle KamAZ chassis. She is accompanied by a control car and a mobile power generator. The communication equipment installed on them makes it possible to exchange information with other modern air defense systems and automatically transmit information to headquarters of a higher level.

The development of the Podlet-K1 radar began in 2010. The Almaz-Antey concern has been supplying serial samples to the troops since 2015. The first of them were sent to strengthen the air defense of Moscow and its environs.

In the 1990s, the unified radar field was lost, and many important regions of the Urals and Siberia were left without air defense cover, Alexander Gorkov, ex-head of the anti-aircraft missile forces of the Russian Air Force, told Izvestia.

– In Soviet times, there was a continuous radar coverage at certain altitudes. There were difficulties with low and extremely low altitudes, – the expert explained. – It is them that the Podlet-K1 stations are called upon to overcome. It is very important. One can imagine that tens and hundreds of ammunition suddenly fly up to a large city. To ensure safety, protective equipment must be ready in time. And besides, it is necessary to build up fire capabilities in these areas, including the most mobile – fighter aircraft. It can be put forward in a short time to missile-hazardous and non-projectile areas.

The 14th Air Force and Air Defense Army is a very large association, whose area of ​​responsibility includes the territory from the Volga region to Lake Baikal. Its headquarters are based in Yekaterinburg, and subordinate formations and units are scattered across 29 regions. The regiments of the 41st Air Defense Division are located in Novosibirsk, Angarsk, Abakan and Achinsk. The 76th Air Defense Division has regiments on the territory of Samara (the headquarters is located here), Yekaterinburg, as well as the city of Engels, Saratov Region.

The 21st mixed air division, headquartered in Yekaterinburg, is considered the most powerful unit of the Russian Aerospace Forces. The main forces included in its composition are two regiments, the fleet of which consists of high-altitude all-weather interceptor MiG-31BM. They are based in Perm and Kansk. There are no other such regiments in the RF Armed Forces – only individual squadrons that are part of other units. The third regiment of the 21st division is located in the village of Shagol near Chelyabinsk, its fleet consists of multipurpose fighter-bombers Su-34.

Such a fleet of aircraft makes it possible to shoot down any aircraft at all altitudes. In addition, the MiG-31BM can carry the Kinzhal hypersonic missile and use it against ground targets.

Air defense units included in the 14th Army are equipped with S-400 and S-300PS anti-aircraft systems.

In the Volga region, the Urals and Siberia, there are many strategic objects: industrial enterprises, nuclear and power plants. All of them must be covered from an air attack, added Alexander Gorkov.

– In Nizhny Tagil and Sverdlovsk there were anti-aircraft missile brigades, in Bereznyaki and Perm – anti-aircraft missile regiments, in Kirov – a brigade. Kazan, Ufa, Chelyabinsk, Magnitogorsk were reliably covered with fire weapons. Nowadays, not all important objects, including strategic ones, are so protected. Therefore, new air defense forces regularly appear on the territory of these regions, – concluded Gorkov.

According to experts, it is critically important to create radar coverage at low altitudes, since it is there that the most dangerous air attack weapons of modern warfare are used – cruise missiles and UAVs.

“The equipment allows modern airplanes, helicopters and cruise missiles to fly at low altitudes with rounding the terrain,” Lieutenant General Aytech Bizhev, former deputy chief of the Air Force for the CIS air defense system, told Izvestia. – In this regard, it became necessary to create a radar station based on new principles of operation, so that they detect aircraft at the greatest possible distance. Low heights are a vulnerable spot for air defense. Because of this, the detection range is reduced. If the device flying at low altitudes is detected too late, there may not be time and necessary funds to react. Podlet-K1 is a modern station that meets all the requirements. It will strengthen the radar field in the most likely flight directions.

Recently, the Ministry of Defense has been actively building up air defense assets over the regions of the Urals and Siberia. As Izvestia previously reported, the deployment of mobile reserve regiments began this year. The new units will be armed with the unique Pantsir anti-aircraft missile-gun systems. Units in a matter of hours can make a march and reliably cover important infrastructure, industrial and social facilities from cruise missiles and drones.
